    Sandstone Grinding Bowl

The bowl shape in the upper right side of this rock was carved out by a local Indian Tribe and used to grind up acorns from surrounding Oak Trees, then made and mixed in with other foods. Several of these features can still easily be identified within the Rock City area of Mt Diablo State Park here in the Bay Area.

The green color on this rock's surface is most likely deposits of Magnesium Iron Silicate left behind after millions of years of mineral-rich water seeping down through the cracks in the stone from the surface.

Located in a semi-secure area of the Valley of fire, these symbols were chipped into the face of the rock as a story for the people of their time and beyond. • Sky Table Petroglyph - Central, CA

Sky Table Petroglyph - Central, CA

My brother Frank and my friend and Photographer Dale Black spent several years searching for this site in the Volcanic Tablelands of Central California near Bishop. Local tribal counsels consider this site the Center of the Universe for their people, and, until lately, they have done an excellent job of protecting the exact location. Google Earth will take you to a site that is nowhere near the actual location. This area is also home to two other highly regarded ancient rock artworks at least hundreds of years old. This part of California has been inhabited by civilizations that proceeded the building the Great pyramids of Egypt, and no one knows how old Sky Rock Petroglyph is. The symbols and meaning of this petroglyph have yet to be fully deciphered. Unfortunately, a couple of years ago, one of the other two priceless historical pictographs was defaced and ruined for all of humanity. These types of acts are significant flaw in our modern society. So sad!

Despite the age, the Pictographs still retain the original bright colors.
